The JOURNEY

Presented by the Nevada Art Museum

Guillermo Bert's "Warriors" series pays homage to essential workers, particularly Latinx individuals, who have been vital during the pandemic. Through 3D scanning and layering techniques, Bert creates life-size wooden sculptures that represent the unseen workforce supporting society.

DIVERSEartLA

Curated by Marisa Caichiolo, DIVERSEartLA is driven by The LA Art Show’s commitment to present thought-provoking programming, using art as a vehicle to raise awareness about important issues confronting society. Addressing the theme of the 2024 edition, Caichiolo said, “Memory is a fundamental aspect of human experience that shapes our individual and collective identities.”

The Nevada Museum of Art presents The Journey by contemporary artist Guillermo Bert, curated by Vivian Zavataro. The installation features a series of 20 highly detailed, life-sized wood sculptures portraying real immigrants who were employed as frontline workers.

In his multimedia works, Bert investigates how ancient traditions and modern technology merge to create narratives of identity, human memory, immigration, culture and humanity.

Guillermo Bert

Guillermo Bert's artistic journey delves into the resilience of immigrants, particularly those crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, reflecting his own immigrant experience from Chile to Los Angeles. His mid-career survey showcases a range of traditional and contemporary artworks, including new pieces created for the exhibition.

Bert's multimedia works explore themes of cultural displacement, colonization, and the commodification of American values. Through series like "Encoded Textiles" and "Border Zone," he blends old traditions with modern technology, inviting viewers to engage with the narratives of marginalized communities actively.

Born in 1959 in Santiago, Chile, Bert left his homeland in the early 1980s, seeking a more inclusive society. After working as an Art Director at the Los Angeles Times and teaching art, he shifted his focus entirely to his own artistic practice. Through his art, Bert amplifies the voices of those often silenced and overlooked, embodying a commitment to social empathy and understanding.

  • Capitalizing on the city’s position on the Pacific Rim, DIVERSEartLA is a special programming section devoted to nurturing the creative energy of international collectors, artists, curators, museums and non-profits by connecting them directly with audiences in Los Angeles. The LA Art Show donates 50,000 square feet of exhibition space to participating organizations each year as our civic engagement, and the featured work is not for sale. Overall curation by Marisa Caichiolo with individual curators from institutions around the world.
